"Exploration is the engine that drives innovation. Innovation drives economic growth. So let's all go exploring.”

- Edith Widder

Grotto Projects

The Paha Sapa Grotto coordinates and manages a multitude of cave-related projects ranging from restoration to exploration. Most project dates are scheduled on an as-needed basis during monthly Grotto meetings, but ongoing exploration trips as part of the Wind Cave and Jewel Cave projects occasionally happen more frequently. The best thing to do if you are interested in participating in a particular project is to come to a Grotto meeting and introduce yourself to us! You're more likely to get connected to the right people for the specific project you might be interested in, and it's also a great way to meet new people and get involved! We understand that sometimes attending meetings might not be an option, so we have also provided a list of the most recent projects and related information on this page. Click on the links below for more information.

Jewel Cave

At over 194 miles in length, Jewel is currently the 3rd longest cave in the world. All of the exploration is conducted by volunteers, many of them Grotto members.
