Sinkhole or Collapse?

On Monday, April 27th 2020 a sinkhole appeared in the Hideaway Hills development in Blackhawk, SD. Working with emergency management officials, cavers initially entered the sinkhole to access the void at the bottom. Expecting to find a a gypsum cave, they soon realized that the sinkhole was a collapse into a 1920's abandoned gypsum mine. Over the course of one evening, six cavers mapped the extent of the mine creating imagery, overlay, and map data for county officials to use.
The current extent of the mine is unknown. The graphic illustrates the extent of the known mine under the development.
